can anyone explain me the concept of oxidation number and oxidation state...m so confused about it...

Oxidation no.of any element is no.of electron obtain or donate by this element.when any element donate electron it's oxidation no. represent with+ve sign and when any atom receive electron it's oxidation no.represent with-ve sign.ex---oxidation no of Hydrogen atom is+1(generally). oxidation no alkali metal is+1 , Alkaline earth metal+2, oxygen-2 but in peroxide case is-1and in super oxide case is-1/2 .

Tendency of elements to loose electron during reactions ..
oxidation number vary from positive to negative .for example metals having tendency to loose electrons to complete there octate there oxidation number is always in positive state and non metal ie oxygen chlorine etc gains electron that's why they having negative oxidation number ..
positive oxidation and negative oxidation depends on numbers of electron exchange between two elements to complete there octate . which one loose there electron having positive oxidation state and which one receives electron is in negative oxidation state .
