as male contain single set of each x and y, so they don't have counter part or u may say they don't have copies of gene present on any of either x or y chromosome. so they are hemizygous simply means without the counterparts which make them different from other chromosomes which have exact copies of genes present in them for example all autosomes and xx chromosome
