5mm thick is subjected to a tensile load of 10 kN. Determine the normal stress on the plate.

Solution:

The normal stress is given by the formula:

σ = F/A

where σ is the normal stress, F is the tensile load and A is the cross-sectional area of the plate.

The cross-sectional area of the plate is:

A = width x thickness

A = 30mm x 5mm

A = 150 mm²

Substituting the values in the formula, we get:

σ = 10 kN / 150 mm²

σ = 66.67 MPa

Therefore, the normal stress on the plate is 66.67 MPa.
