A Solutions is a homogeneous mixture which is formed when the tiny individual particles of one substance are uniformly dispersed among the individual particles of the other substance. Salt water is an example of Solution. The solution so formed is composed of two things:-
(a) Solute:- It is the substance which is dissolved into the other substance.The solute is usually present in the smaller quantity. In the above example salt is the solute component as it is being dissolved into the solvent i.e., water (in this case).
(b) Solvent:- It is the component in which the solute is dissolved. It is usually present in larger quantity. In the above example water acts as the Solvent as salt (in this case) is being dissolved into water which is the solvent. Water is also known as "the universal solvent".

3. Gaseous Solutions: Gaseous solutions have both the solute and solvent in the gaseous state. For instance, the air we breathe is a gaseous solution of oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases.

Concentration of Solutions:
The concentration of a solution refers to the amount of solute present in a given quantity of the solution. It can be expressed in various ways:
1. Mass Percentage: It is the ratio of the mass of the solute to the mass of the solution, multiplied by 100.
2. Volume Percentage: It is the ratio of the volume of the solute to the volume of the solution, multiplied by 100.
3. Molarity (M): It is the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter of the solution.
4. Molality (m): It is the number of moles of solute dissolved in one kilogram of the solvent.
