Doping is a process of deliberate addition of a desirable impurity to a pure pure semiconductor so as to increase conductivity is called doping. The impurity atoms added are called dopants and the semiconductor doped with the impurity atoms is called extrinsic semiconductors.
Two types of dopants :
a) pentavalent dopants : they have 5 valence electrons.
Eg: As,Sb,P
b)trivalent dopants : they have 3 valence electrons.
Eg : In,B,Al
On doping Si or Ge with pentavalent and trivalent impurity atoms, we get 2 different types of semiconductors called n type & p type respectively.
