The Nazi party gained popularity during the 1910s - 1930s. To understand how they came to power, we must first look at the parties history.
On 29th July 1921, Adolf Hitler became became the leader of the NSDP (Nazi party).
On 8th November 1923, Hitler tried to overthrow the Bavarian government (German state) using military force. This event was called the Munich (Beer Hall) Putsch. They failed and Hitler was sent to prison in 1924 for 10 months (meant to be 5 years), in prison, Hitler wrote his book Mein Kampf. The Nazi party tried to use force to come to power, but failed.
In April 1925, the SS formed. this was the Nazi parties goones/thugs/soldiers.
On the 4th July 1926, the Hitler Youth formed.
On 20th August 1927, the first annual party conference was held at Nuremburg. Known as the Nuremburg Rally all subsequent annual meetings were held at Nuremburg.
From 1929–1930 the Great Depression occurs. Support for the group increases.
In September 1930, the Nazi Party gained 18.3% of the vote in the Reichstag elections, they are now the second biggest political party.
In July 1932, the Nazi party gained 37.4% of the vote in the Reichstag elections, they are now the largest German political party.
Hitler now becomes the chancellor of Germany.
In 27th February 1933, the Reichstag fire occurs. Hitler blames the communist party, which at the time was the second biggest party in Germany (KPD). Hitler bans the KPD, securing a clear majority in government. Hitler allows another election in 1933, the Nazi part has 44% of the general vote.
Hitler now has the majority in government, and can do whatever he wants (politically) without any trouble. We all know what happens next.
The Nazi party had a large following. They tried to overthrow the government and take control of Germany- but failed. As a result, Hitler tried to get power the the diplomatic system. He eventually gained power of Germany in a fair way. I know this seems surprising that the Nazis were so largely supported, but the situation in Germany at the time was not pleasant, and the Nazi party promised to solve these problems by gaining German power in Europe, banishing the communists and Jews from Germany etc.
Therefore the Nazi party had a huge following, and as a result gained power over Germany fair and square.
The supporters of the Nazi party were just regular German citizens. No one new what was to come… The party just seemed like a solution to the countries problems, and so many people supported them. Apart from communists- they supported the KPD party.
