Problem

A child drops a ball from a height of 10m. Assume that it's velocity increases uniformly at the rate of 10m/s sq. Find (1) velocity with which the ball strikes the ground and (2) the time taken by the ball to reach the ground.

Solution

Given:

  • Initial velocity (u) = 0 m/s

  • Acceleration (a) = 10 m/s² (downwards due to gravity)

  • Final velocity (v) = ?

  • Distance (s) = 10 m

  • Time (t) = ?

Calculating the final velocity

Final velocity (v) can be calculated using the following formula:

v² = u² + 2as

Substituting the given values:

v² = 0² + 2(10)(10)

v² = 200

v = √200

v ≈ 14.14 m/s

Calculating the time taken

Time taken (t) can be calculated using the following formula:

s = ut + ½at²

Substituting the given values:

10 = 0 + ½(10)t²

10 = 5t²

t² = 2

t = √2

t ≈ 1.41 s

Answer

The velocity with which the ball strikes the ground is approximately 14.14 m/s and the time taken by the ball to reach the ground is approximately 1.41 s.
