why is the biosphere important for living organisms? Related: NCERT ...
There is a very narrow zone on Earth where land, water and air come in contact with each other. This is called biosphere. All the living things such as plants, animals, and human being exist only in this zone (the biosphere). So biosphere is of great significance for all of us. There are ten lakh species of animals in the animal kingdom. It includes microscopic organisms to large animals like the elephant and the whale fish. The organisms in the animal kingdom move from one place to the other. Three lakh species of plants are found in the plant kingdom. It includes microscopic algae to large trees.

The Importance of the Biosphere for Living Organisms

The biosphere is the layer of the Earth where life exists. It includes all living organisms, their interactions with each other, and with the physical environment. The biosphere is essential for the survival and well-being of living organisms due to several reasons.

1. Habitat for Life:
The biosphere provides a habitat for a wide range of organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms. It offers the necessary physical conditions, such as temperature, sunlight, water, and nutrients, that support life.

2. Biodiversity:
The biosphere is home to an incredible diversity of species. Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms in an ecosystem. The biosphere's richness in biodiversity ensures the stability of ecosystems and allows for ecological balance. It provides resilience to disturbances and increases the chances of survival for species in changing environmental conditions.

3. Ecological Services:
The biosphere plays a crucial role in providing various ecological services that are essential for the well-being of living organisms. These services include:

- Oxygen Production: Plants in the biosphere carry out photosynthesis, producing oxygen as a byproduct. Oxygen is vital for the survival of most organisms, as it is necessary for respiration.
- Nutrient Cycling: The biosphere facilitates the cycling of nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus between living organisms and the environment. This recycling process ensures the availability of essential elements for all organisms.
- Pollination: Many plants in the biosphere rely on pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, for reproduction. Pollinators transfer pollen from one flower to another, enabling the production of seeds and fruits.
- Soil Formation: The decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms in the biosphere contributes to the formation of fertile soil. Soil provides essential nutrients and a stable anchoring medium for plants.

4. Climate Regulation:
The biosphere plays a significant role in regulating the Earth's climate. Forests, for example, act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reducing the greenhouse effect. Additionally, the transpiration process by plants releases moisture into the air, influencing local and global weather patterns.

5. Food and Resources:
The biosphere is a source of food and resources for living organisms. Plants and animals in the biosphere provide food for humans and other animals. Additionally, various resources such as timber, medicinal plants, and minerals are obtained from the biosphere.

In conclusion, the biosphere is crucial for living organisms due to its role as a habitat, its support for biodiversity and ecological services, its contribution to climate regulation, and its provision of food and resources. It is essential to conserve and protect the biosphere to ensure the well-being and survival of all organisms on Earth.
