If the thread melts, throws off a black, noxious smoke that smells like petrochemicals, and leaves a black plastic bead, it is, for sure, synthetic .There could be problem if the fabric is a blend, say 50% cotton, and 50% polyester, then the burn test will give mixed results, that is, characteristics of both. Determining the fiber content of a blend requires more sophisticated techniques, but the burn test will give you a good, initial approximation.
