There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum: rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER). Both types are present in plant and animal cells. The two types of ER often appear as if separate, but they are sub-compartments of the same organelle.

There are two type of endoplasmic reticulum. These are smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).

Rough endoplasmic reticulum has rough surface because of presence of ribosomes. Mainly because of presence of ribosomes in it help in secretion of protein.

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum has smooth surface because it doesn't bear anything in surface. It help in secretion and transportation of lipids . It also helps in toxify the waste
