The density of quartz mineral was determined by adding a weighed piece to a graduated cylinder containing 51.2ml water. After the quartz was submersed, the water level was 65.7 ml. The quartz piece weighed  38.4g. What was the density of quartz?
  • a)
    1.71 gm/ml
  • b)
    1.33 gm/ml
  • c)
    2.65 gm/ml
  • d)
    1.65 gm/ml
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The density of quartz mineral was determined by adding a weighed piece...
Density=mass/volume.
Therefore density of quartz =mass /change in volume of water
Change in volume gives volume of quartz.
Density=38.4/65.7-51.2
=38.4/14.5
=2.648~2.65

The density of quartz mineral was determined by adding a weighed piece...
Given:
Volume of water before adding quartz = 51.2 ml
Volume of water after adding quartz = 65.7 ml
Weight of quartz piece = 38.4 g

To find:
Density of quartz

Solution:
1. Calculate the volume of quartz using the principle of displacement of water:
Volume of quartz = Volume of water displaced by quartz
Volume of quartz = 65.7 ml - 51.2 ml
Volume of quartz = 14.5 ml

2. Calculate the density of quartz using the formula:
Density = Mass / Volume
Density = 38.4 g / 14.5 ml
Density = 2.65 g/ml

Therefore, the density of quartz is 2.65 g/ml (Option C)

Note: The density of quartz is higher than the density of water (1 g/ml), which is why the quartz sinks in water. The principle of displacement of water is used to accurately determine the volume of irregularly shaped objects like the quartz piece in this problem.
