Why do geostationary satellites always lie in equatorial plane ?
Verified Answer
Why do geostationary satellites always lie in equatorial plane ?
Since GEO satellites have a orbital period the same as the earth (a Sidereal Day) they stay above the same longitude continually. If they are additionally on the equator they will also stay at the same latitude (the equator). This ONLY happens on the equator. So to an earth observer it appears that the satellite is motionless in the sky (i.e. “Geostationary” meaning stationary relative to the surface of the earth). This is the whole point of GEO orbits.

This is what allows you to have a DirecTV or DishNetwork dish pointing at the same point in the sky all of the time.
