Under the Gupta Empire, which ruled over a major part of the Indian subcontinent from the 4th to the 6th century CE, an efficient system of administration was established. This system was characterized by a centralized authority and a well-organized bureaucracy.

1. Centralized Authority:
The Gupta Empire was ruled by a powerful king who exercised absolute authority over the administration. The king was considered the highest authority in the empire and his decisions were final. He was responsible for maintaining law and order, safeguarding the empire's interests, and promoting the welfare of his subjects.

2. Provincial Administration:
The empire was divided into several provinces, known as Bhuktis or Vishayas. Each province was headed by a governor, known as a Kumaramatya, who was appointed by the king. The governor was responsible for the overall administration of the province, including tax collection, maintenance of law and order, and implementation of royal policies.

3. District Administration:
The provinces were further divided into districts, known as Bhogas or Vishayas. Each district was governed by a district officer, known as a Vishayapati. The Vishayapati was responsible for maintaining law and order, collecting taxes, and overseeing the implementation of government policies at the district level.

4. Village Administration:
The village was the smallest administrative unit in the Gupta Empire. Each village was governed by a headman, known as the Gramapati. The Gramapati was responsible for maintaining law and order, collecting taxes, and resolving disputes at the village level. The village council, known as the Sabha, consisted of influential members of the village who assisted the Gramapati in decision-making.

5. Bureaucracy:
The administration of the Gupta Empire was supported by a well-organized bureaucracy. The bureaucracy consisted of officials who were appointed by the king and served various administrative roles. These officials included ministers, secretaries, accountants, and record keepers who helped in the smooth functioning of the empire.

6. Revenue Collection:
Taxation played a crucial role in the administration of the Gupta Empire. The main sources of revenue included land taxes, trade taxes, and custom duties. The revenue collected was utilized for the maintenance of the administration, defense, and for the welfare of the people.

In conclusion, the administration under the Gupta Empire was characterized by a centralized authority, with the king at the top, and a well-organized bureaucracy. The empire was divided into provinces, districts, and villages, each with its own administrative head. The efficient system of administration helped in the smooth functioning of the empire and contributed to its stability and prosperity.
