ANALOG COMMUNICATION

Modulation
It is the process of placing the message signal over some carrier signal to make it suitable for transmission.

Need for Modulation:
1. Size of antenna required for receiving the wave is reduced if signal is transmitted at high frequency.
2. Many number of signals can be transmitted simultaneously by selecting the carriers of different frequencies.
3. The interference of noise and other signals can be reduced by changing the frequency of transmission.
4. Integration of different communication system is possible.

Amplitude Modulation
Amplitude Modulated Signal:
AM may be defined as a system in which the maximum amplitude of the carrier wave is made proportional to
the instantaneous value (amplitude) of the modulating or base band signal

Frequency spectrum of AM wave:

Amin – minimum amplitude

Key points:
Demodulation of AM signal is simpler than DSB-SC and SSB systems, Demodulation of DSB-SC and SSB is
rather difficult and expensive.
It is quite easier to generate conventional AM signals at high power level as compared to DSB-SC and SSB
signals. For this reason, conventional AM systems are used for broad casting purpose.
The advantage of DSB-SC and SSB systems over conventional AM system is that the former requires lesser
power to transmit the same information.
SSB scheme needs only one half of the bandwidth required in DSB-SC system and less than that required in
VSB also.
SSB modulation scheme is used for long distance transmission of voice signals because it allows longer spacing
between repeaters

FAQs on Analog Communication Formulas for GATE ECE Exam - Communication System - Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)

1. What are the basic formulas for analog communication in the GATE ECE exam?
Ans. Some of the basic formulas for analog communication that are commonly asked in the GATE ECE exam include: - Formula for modulation index in amplitude modulation (AM): Modulation Index (m) = (Amplitude of message signal) / (Amplitude of carrier signal) - Formula for bandwidth in amplitude modulation (AM): Bandwidth = (Frequency of message signal) + (Amplitude of message signal) - Formula for carrier power in amplitude modulation (AM): Carrier Power = (Amplitude of carrier signal)^2 / 2 - Formula for peak power in amplitude modulation (AM): Peak Power = (Amplitude of carrier signal)^2 / 4 - Formula for modulation index in frequency modulation (FM): Modulation Index (β) = (Frequency deviation) / (Modulating frequency)
2. How can I calculate the modulation index in amplitude modulation (AM)?
Ans. The modulation index (m) in amplitude modulation (AM) can be calculated using the formula: Modulation Index (m) = (Amplitude of message signal) / (Amplitude of carrier signal) The modulation index represents the ratio of the maximum amplitude of the message signal to the amplitude of the carrier signal. It determines the extent of modulation and affects the bandwidth and power requirements of the AM signal.
3. What is the formula for bandwidth in amplitude modulation (AM)?
Ans. The formula for bandwidth in amplitude modulation (AM) is given by: Bandwidth = (Frequency of message signal) + (Amplitude of message signal) The bandwidth of an AM signal is determined by the sum of the carrier frequency and the highest frequency component of the message signal. It represents the range of frequencies required to transmit the AM signal without distortion.
4. How can I calculate the carrier power in amplitude modulation (AM)?
Ans. The carrier power in amplitude modulation (AM) can be calculated using the formula: Carrier Power = (Amplitude of carrier signal)^2 / 2 The carrier power represents the average power carried by the carrier signal in an AM system. It is proportional to the square of the amplitude of the carrier signal.
5. What is the formula for modulation index in frequency modulation (FM)?
Ans. The modulation index (β) in frequency modulation (FM) can be calculated using the formula: Modulation Index (β) = (Frequency deviation) / (Modulating frequency) The modulation index represents the ratio of the maximum frequency deviation of the carrier signal to the frequency of the modulating signal. It determines the extent of frequency variation in the FM signal and affects the bandwidth and noise immunity of the FM system.
