| 1. What is a fraction? |  |
Ans. A fraction is a mathematical representation of a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator (the number above the line) and a denominator (the number below the line), separated by a fraction bar. For example, in the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.
| 2. How do you add fractions? | |
Ans. To add fractions, you need to have a common denominator. If the denominators are already the same, you simply add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same. For example, 1/4 + 3/4 = 4/4 = 1. If the denominators are different, you need to find a common denominator by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. Then, you convert the fractions to have the same denominator and add the numerators together.
| 3. What is a proper fraction? | |
Ans. A proper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator. In other words, the value of the fraction is less than 1. For example, 2/5 is a proper fraction because 2 is smaller than 5. Proper fractions represent parts of a whole or a set.
| 4. How do you subtract fractions? | |
Ans. To subtract fractions, you also need a common denominator. If the denominators are the same, you subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same. For example, 5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2. If the denominators are different, you find a common denominator and convert the fractions to have the same denominator before subtracting the numerators.
| 5. What is an improper fraction? | |
Ans. An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is equal to or larger than the denominator. In other words, the value of the fraction is equal to or greater than 1. For example, 7/4 is an improper fraction because 7 is larger than 4. Improper fractions can also be written as mixed numbers, which consist of a whole number and a proper fraction.
