Cell Referencing
Cell referencing is essential in spreadsheet software such as Excel.
- It enables you to reference the content of a cell in a formula instead of entering a specific value.

Cell referencing includes two types: absolute and relative.
Relative Cell Referencing
- Copying a formula with a relative cell reference in Excel causes the reference to adjust relative to the new location.

Absolute Cell Referencing
- When you copy a formula with an absolute cell reference, that reference remains constant and does not change.
- For example, copying the formula "=$A$1 B1" from cell C1 to C2 results in the formula staying as "=$A$1 B2."
Consider the following example spreadsheet:
- If you input the formula "=A1 B1" in cell C1 and drag the fill handle down to copy the formula to cell C2, the formula in C2 will change to "=A2 B2"
- But if you input the formula "=$A$1 B1" in cell C1 and drag the fill handle down, the formula in C2 will still refer to cell A1: "=$A$1 B2"
