In truth, Uther had a son, Arthur, who had been taken away as a baby and raised secretly by the loyal knight Sir Ector, under the guidance of the wise magician Merlin.

At Christmas, the Archbishop of Canterbury prayed for a sign to reveal the rightful king. A great stone appeared in the churchyard with a sword stuck in it. Golden letters declared: “Whosoever pulleth this sword out of this stone is the rightful king of England.” Many knights tried with all their strength, but none succeeded.

On the day of a tournament, Sir Kay forgot his sword. Young Arthur went to fetch it but found the castle locked. Seeing the sword in the stone, he drew it out easily. When asked to repeat the act, only Arthur could succeed. Though many doubted him, Merlin revealed that Arthur was Uther Pendragon’s true son. The people finally accepted him, and Arthur was crowned the rightful King of England.
