Explanation

Stanza 1

I looked in the mirror and
looked at my nose:
it’s the funniest thing,
the way it grows
stuck right out where all of it shows
with two little holes where the
breathing goes.
In the first part of the poem, the speaker talks about their own nose, looking at it in the mirror. They find it funny how their nose stands out on their face, with two small holes for breathing. The speaker notices its shape and where it sits on their face, recognizing its unique appearance. Noses Chapter Notes | English for Class 4

Stanza 2

I looked in the mirror
and saw in there
 the end of my chin
and the start of my hair
and between there
isn’t much space to spare with my nose,
 like a handle, sticking there.

In the second part of the poem, the speaker keeps describing their reflection in the mirror. They notice how their nose sits between the end of their chin and the start of their hair, leaving little space in between. The speaker compares their nose to a handle, highlighting its distinct and noticeable presence on their face.

Stanza 3

If ever you want
to giggle and shout
and can’t think of what
to do it about,
just look in the mirror and then, no doubt,
you’ll see how funny your nose
sticks out!

In the third stanza, the speaker suggests a playful activity for amusement. They propose that if someone is feeling bored or in need of a laugh, they should simply look at their own nose in the mirror. The speaker implies that noses are inherently funny and can bring joy or laughter when observed closely.Noses Chapter Notes | English for Class 4
