1. What are the three states of matter?
Ans. The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. In the solid state, particles are closely packed and have a fixed shape and volume. In the liquid state, particles are loosely packed and have a definite volume but no fixed shape. In the gas state, particles are widely spaced and have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.
2. How does a substance change its state of matter?
Ans. A substance changes its state of matter by either gaining or losing heat energy. On the other hand, when heat energy is removed from a substance, it loses energy and changes from a gas to a liquid (condensation) and then to a solid (freezing).
3. What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Ans. Evaporation and boiling are both processes of vaporization, but they differ in terms of energy requirement and temperature. Evaporation occurs at the surface of a liquid when it is heated, but it takes place at any temperature without reaching the boiling point. On the other hand, boiling occurs when a liquid reaches its boiling point, which is the temperature at which its vapor pressure equals the atmospheric pressure. Boiling involves the formation of bubbles throughout the liquid.
4. Can matter exist in a state other than solid, liquid, or gas?
Ans. Yes, matter can exist in a state other than solid, liquid, or gas. There are two additional states of matter known as plasma and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Plasma is a highly ionized gas in which atoms have lost some or all of their electrons, resulting in the presence of free electrons and positively charged ions. BEC is a state of matter that occurs at extremely low temperatures close to absolute zero, where a group of bosons (particles with integer spin) occupies the same quantum state.
5. What happens to the particles of matter when it changes its state?
Ans. When matter changes its state, the arrangement and movement of its particles also change. In the solid state, particles are tightly packed in a regular arrangement and vibrate about fixed positions. In the liquid state, particles are less closely packed and move more freely, sliding past each other. In the gas state, particles are far apart and move rapidly in random directions. The energy of the particles increases as matter changes from solid to liquid to gas.
