A number of mineral-based industries have been established in the state, leveraging the availability of basic infrastructure and raw materials.

Iron & Steel Plant

  • Bhilai Steel Plant, Bhilai, Durg - Established in 1959

Sponge/Pig Iron Plants

  • Over 85 units have been established in the state for producing sponge iron and other allied materials.

Cement Plants

  • ACC Ltd., Jamul, Durg - Established in 1965, Production Capacity: 15.80
  • Century Cement Ltd., Baikunth, Raipur - Established in 1975, Production Capacity: 18.00
  • Grasim Cement Ltd., Rawan, Raipur - Established in 1995, Production Capacity: 20.61
  • Lafarge India Ltd., Gopalnagar, Janjgir - Established in 1982, Production Capacity: 22.40
  • Ultra Tech Cement Ltd., Hirmi, Raipur - Established in 1994, Production Capacity: 17.50
  • Ambuja Cement Eastern Ltd., Rawan, Raipur - Established in 1987, Production Capacity: 11.46
  • Lafarge India Ltd., Sonadih, Raipur - Established in 1993, Production Capacity: 31.80

All these cement companies are in the process of enhancing their production capacities. In addition to these, several new companies such as Shree Cements, Emami Group, Rungta, Monnet, Jindal, Jaypee, and Adhunik, among others, are in the process of establishing major cement units in the state.

Aluminium Plant

  • Bharat Aluminium Co. Ltd., Korba

Steps Taken to Reduce Commercial Disputes

To help reduce the time taken to enforce contracts and provide efficient judgments in commercial cases, Chhattisgarh has established the:

  • 1st Commercial Court in the country, established in Naya Raipur to expedite commercial cases. It features new and modern infrastructure.
  • A dedicated Principal Judge and separate staff set-up, with new and modern infrastructure.
  • E-filing, summons, and cause list for commercial disputes.
  • E-payment for court fees.
  • Digitally signed court orders.

Chhattisgarh: Main Features of its Economy

  • Chhattisgarh is well endowed with various natural resources, which play a significant role in the state's economy.
  • The gross state domestic product (GSDP) of Chhattisgarh is expected to reach US$ 47.75 billion in FY 2018, up from US$ 36.6 billion in FY 2015. The GSDP of the state grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.83 percent between 2004-05 and 2015-16.
  • Chhattisgarh is a power surplus state and is among the few profitable states in terms of utility-based electricity. The Korba district in Chhattisgarh is known as the power capital of India. Chhattisgarh has planned to achieve an installed power generation capacity of 30,000 MW.
  • Mineral resources are Chhattisgarh’s biggest strength. The state is a leading producer of minerals such as coal, iron ore, and dolomite, accounting for approximately 22.6 percent, 19.8 percent, and 36.5 percent of India’s production, respectively. In addition, the state has significant reserves of bauxite, limestone, and quartzite. Chhattisgarh is the only state in India that produces tin concentrates and accounts for 35.4 percent of India's tin ore reserves.
  • Chhattisgarh has emerged as one of the most preferred investment destinations in India. The state has been acclaimed as "one of the best fiscally managed states" by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The state attracted cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) worth US$ 1.29 billion from April 2000 to March 2016.
  • A wide range of fiscal and policy incentives for businesses have been announced under its Industrial Policy, 2014-19. Additionally, the state has well-drafted policies for the IT/ITeS, solar energy, agro and food processing, minerals, and biotechnology sectors. Chhattisgarh stands fourth among Indian states in rankings based on ease of doing business and reforms implementation, according to a study by the World Bank and KPMG.
  • Chhattisgarh is the only state in India to produce tin concentrates and accounts for 36 percent of the country’s tin ore reserves. Dante Wada is the sole district producing tin from six mines. The state accounts for 4 percent and 36.5 percent of the country’s diamond and dolomite reserves, respectively. It ranks among the top coal, tin, and dolomite production states in the country.

Iron and Steel

  • Chhattisgarh is the iron and steel hub of the country. The Bhilai Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) produces more than 3.153 million tons of saleable steel per annum.
  • Chhattisgarh has abundant limestone reserves that support a strong cement sector. The state accounts for around 5.4 percent of the total limestone reserves in India.
