Ques 1: On festival days students burst firecrackers, not knowing how much pollution they cause. You are the Head boy/Head girl of your school. You wish to tell them some facts about bursting firecrackers and the other sources of pollution. Prepare a detailed speech to be given in the school assembly. You may use the following hints in preparing the speech in about 120 words.
• Increase in air pollution because of suspended particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide etc.
• Increase in respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, heart attacks etc.
• Increase in noise pollution causing deafness.
Ans:
Respected Principal, teachers and dear friends Good morning! Today I would like to talk about a subject that we all do know but scarcely pay any heed to. On the days of festivals most of us burst firecrackers, not realising the amount of pollution they cause. Thus, we are ourselves degrading the environment by causing atmospheric pollution. The suspended particulate matter and gases like nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide are added to the atmosphere when a cracker is burst. The increase in atmospheric pollution gives rise to respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis. The cases of heart attacks and strokes multiply. The noise pollution created by bursting of crackers may cause deafness also. We may enjoy the bright light and the sound of explosion for a few seconds, but we must not ignore the permanent damage caused by bursting of crackers. Hence, it becomes the duty of each one of us to keep our environment clean and refrain from bursting crackers. Let us put an end to this wasteful exercise of burning our hand earned money. Thank you

By this comparison, the poet created an effect on the reader that the song of the solitary reaper was extraordinarily melodious and refreshing. Ans:

The king stayed in his palace near Flanflasnic, a city 18 English miles away from the sea coast. Gulliver begged a page to take him near the sea, as Glumdalclitch was very ill. Not feeling well, Guiliver told the page to leave him in the hammock and close the window. Gulliver was awakened by a violent pull and felt the box raised very high in the air at a tremendous speed. Gulliver discovered that an eagle had caught hold of his box with an intention to drop it on a rock and then pick his body and eat it. A crash told he was floating in the sea.

This is the land of living yaks and the legendary Yeti. Nathu La Pass is situated on the Indo- Tibetan border. It has been under the control of armed forces. It is however opened to domestic tourists in groups of 8 to 10. Our group was allowed to spend half an hour at the border. We could see the Bhutan watersheds Chumbi Valley, the Jelap la range and the Lungze ridge leading to Cangtok. I can never forget the yak ride at the Tromgo Lake. A yak is just like our buffalo. But whereas the buffalo always looks up, the Yak always looks down. In short, Nathu La, the Roof of Sikkim, presents a beauty of nature that is only to be experienced. Yours affectionately Arpita

Ques 13: Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
One of the most interesting features about the British Constitution, historically, is that the Constitution was not evolved by logicians. It has grown to what it is through the work of men like you and me-just ordinary people who have adapted the government of the country in order to meet the environment of the age in which they lived and they have always preserved sufficient flexibility to enable that adaptation to be accomplished. Not that it is extremely important, but it seems to me that one of the reasons why our people are alive and flourishing and have avoided many of the troubles that have fallen to less happy nations is because we have never been guided by logic in anything we have done. If you will only do what I have done-study the history of the growth of the constitution from the time of the Civil war until the Hanoverians came to the throne-you will see what a country can do without the aid of logic, but with the aid of common sense.
Questions: (a)  What does the passage imply about the British constitution?
(b) Why have the common people of England adapted the government of their country?
(c) According to the author, why are Britishers alive and flourishing?
(d) What has the author learnt from history?
(e) How did the Britishers adapt their constitution to meet the environment of the age?

Ans: (a) The British Constitution is flexible.
(b) The common people of England have adapted the government of their country to meet the environment of their age.
(c) According to the author, Britishers are alive and flourishing because they have never been guided by logic in anything they have done.
(d) The author has learnt from history that a country can do a lot without the help of logic, but with the help of common sense.
(e) The Britishers could adapt their constitution to meet the environment of the age because they have always preserved sufficient flexibility.

Ques 14: Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing the answers from the given options.
Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing-fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty and therefore it is no wonder that cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. It is because fear is at the basis of these two things. In this world we can now begin a little to understand things and a little to master them by help of science, which has forced its way step by step against religion and against the opposition of all the old precepts. Science can help us to get over this craven fear in which mankind has lived for so many generations. Science can teach us and I think our own heart can teach us, no longer to look around for imaginary supports, no longer to invent allies in the sky, but rather to look for our own efforts here below to make this world a fit place to live in instead of the sort of place that the churches in all these centuries have made it.
Questions: (a) Religion, according to the passage is based.....
(i) mainly upon cruelty
(ii) primarily upon mystery
iii) primarily and mainly upon defeat
(iv) upon fear of mystery, defeat and death

(b) Fear is at the basis of.........
(i) terror and defeat
(ii) troubles and disputes
(iii) cruelty and religion
(iv) unknown and mystery

(c) Science has helped people........
(i) to conquer rule of religion
(ii) not to depend on magic
(iii) to give up strange beliefs
(iv) to understand things and master them

(d) Science teaches us.........
(i) to believe in old precepts
(ii) to believe in our own efforts rather than religion
(iii) to look for imaginary support
(iv) to make churches better places to live in

(e) Religion and science.........
(i) go together
(ii) are alike
(iii) mean the same
(iv) do not go together
Ans:
(a) (iv) upon fear of mystery, defeat and death
(b) (iii) cruelty and religion
(c) (iv) to understand things and master them
(d) (ii) to believe in our own efforts rather than religion
(e) (iv) do not go together

Ques 15: Read the passage and answer the questions that follow by choosing the answers from the given options.
1. The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, off the Western coast of South America. They are a rocky lonely spot, but they are also one of the most unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of the last giant tortoises left on Earth.
2. Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises or land turtles, wander slowly around the rocks and sand of the islands. Strangely, each of these islands has its own particular kinds of tortoise. There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands, each kind being slightly different from the other.
3. Hundreds of years ago, thousands of tortoises wandered around these islands. However, all that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived in 1535, their ships had no refrigerators. This meant that fresh food was always a problem for the sailors on board. The giant tortoises provided a solution to this problem.
4. Ships would anchor off the islands and crew would row ashore and seize as many tortoises as they could. Once the animals were aboard the ship, the sailors would roll the tortoises onto their backs. The tortoises were completely helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used for soups and stews. Almost 100000 tortoises were carried off in this way.

(i) The sailors went looking for refrigerators
(ii) Fresh food was available in plenty
(iii) The giant tortoises were killed and eaten
(iv) The sailors seised the tortoises to store in refrigerators

(i) ships would go off
(ii) ships would be near the shore
(iii) ships would be off to another land
(iv) ships would go to another island
