Class 9 Geography Chapter 1 Assertion and Reason Questions - Contemporary India - I

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q1: Assertion (A): The Narmada and the Tapi are west flowing rivers and drains into the Arabian sea.
Reason (R): Tilting of the peninsular block from southeast to the northwest direction.
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
(c)
The Peninsular drainage system is governed by many factors. Amongst them is the slight tilting of the peninsular block from northwest to southeast direction which gives the orientation to the entire drainage system towards Bay of Bengal. That is why many rivers like Krishna, Godavari, Cauvery drain towards the Bay of Bengal. Reason is incorrect: But the Narmada and the Tapi are exceptions as they flow west, towards the Arabian sea. Direction of their flow is not governed by the tilting of the peninsular block as they flow through rift valleys which are formed due to multiple subsidence and upliftment of the Earth’s surfaces. Narmada’s course is defined by the Son-Narmada Fault (NSF), which divides the Indian landmass into the peninsular block of the south and a northern foreland block. Moreover, the Peninsular block is tilted slightly eastwards.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q2: Assertion (A): Most of the peninsular rivers drain into the Bay of Bengal.
Reason (R): The peninsular plateau is sloping eastwards.

Reason (R): Tilting of the peninsular block from southeast to the northwest direction.
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (a)
Deccan, the entire southern peninsula of India south of the Narmada River, marked centrally by a high triangular tableland. The Deccan’s average elevation is about 2,000 feet (600 meters), sloping generally eastward. Its principal rivers—the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri (Cauvery)—flow from the Western Ghats eastward to the Bay of Bengal. Reason is true and corr:ect explanation of Assertion: The pattern of flow of peninsular rivers from west to east proves that the general elevation of the plateau is from the west to the east.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q3: Assertion (A): An upland drainage basin is called water divide.
Reason (R): Any elevated area separates the basin forming two drainage basins.

Reason (R): Tilting of the peninsular block from southeast to the northwest direction.
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (a)

  • The assertion (A) is true. An upland drainage basin is indeed referred to as a water divide, as it separates the flow of water between different drainage basins.
  • The reason (R) is also true. Any elevated area, such as a mountain or ridge, can act as a natural boundary that separates the drainage basins on either side. This separation causes the flow of water to move in different directions, creating distinct drainage patterns. The reason correctly explains why an upland area is called a water divide.

Since both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason provides the correct explanation for the assertion, the correct answer is (a).

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q4: Assertion (A): Most of the HImalayan rivers are perennial.
Reason (R): Perennial rivers receive water from rains as well as from melted snow from the lofty mountains.

Most of the Himalayan rivers are indeed perennial, which means they flow throughout the year.
  • The reason (R) is also true. Perennial rivers receive water not only from rainfall but also from the melting of snow in the Himalayan mountains. This snowmelt contributes to the continuous flow of water even during dry seasons. The reason provides the correct explanation for the assertion.
  • Since both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason explains the assertion, the correct answer is (a).

(Note: The third "Reason" mentioned in your question appears to be incomplete and unrelated to the provided assertion and reason. If you have another question or statement related to it, please provide the complete context.)

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q5: Assertion (A): The peninsular rivers have shorter and shallow courses.
Reason (R): Some of the peninsular rivers originate in the central highlands and flow towards the west.

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (b)
A large number of peninsular rivers are seasonal as their flow is dependent on rainfall.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q6: Assertion (A): In Tibet, Brahmaputra river carries a smaller volume of water.
Reason (R): Brahmaputra river is seasonal river.

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (c)
The Brahmaputra river carries less water in Tibet as Tibet is a dry and cold region.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q7: Assertion (A): Godavari is known as dakshin Ganga.
Reason (R): It rises from the slopes of the Western Ghats in the Nashik district of Maharashtra and drains into the bay of Bengal.

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (b)
Because of its length and the area it covers it is known as dakshin ganga.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q8: Assertion (A): Guru Govind Sagar Lake is formed due to human activities.
Reason (R): Damming of river for the generation of hydel power led to the formation of this lake.

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (a)
The assertion (A) is true. Guru Govind Sagar Lake is indeed a man-made reservoir formed due to human activities.
The reason (R) is also true. The damming of a river for hydel power generation can lead to the creation of a lake behind the dam, as is the case with Guru Govind Sagar Lake. The dam prevents the river's flow and results in the accumulation of water, forming the lake. Therefore, both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason provides the correct explanation for the assertion.

Direction: In the questions given below, there are two  statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements and chose the correct  option:
Q9: Assertion (A): The Caspian, the Dead, the Aral sea are lakes.
Reason (R): Lakes of larger extent are called the seas.

Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
A is true but R is false.
A is false but R is true.
Ans:
 (a)
Both the assertion (A) and the reason (R) are true. The Caspian Sea, the Dead Sea, and the Aral Sea are indeed referred to as seas, but they are actually large saltwater lakes.
The reason (R) is also true. The distinction between a lake and a sea can sometimes be based on the extent of the body of water. While lakes are generally smaller, seas are usually larger bodies of saltwater. Therefore, both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason provides the correct explanation for the assertion.
