• Africa hosts 54 countries, the highest number of any continent.
• It ranks second in both land area and population.
• Surrounding Africa are the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Atlantic Ocean.
• Algeria is Africa’s largest country by land area, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
• Nigeria has the continent’s largest population.
• Seychelles, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is Africa’s smallest and least populous country.

Europe: The Heart of Western Civilization

• Europe is bordered by Asia to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
• The European Union (EU), a political and economic alliance, includes 27 member countries, primarily in Europe.
