Introduction
Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, situated in western India, is one of
the eight union territories of India. Previously, they were two separate union
territories until their merger in January 2020, resulting in the formation of "Dadra
& Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu." Daman serves as the capital of the merged
union territory. While Nagar Haveli lies between Maharashtra and Gujarat, Dadra
is an enclave located a few kilometers north of Nagar Haveli in Gujarat. Daman &
Diu, on the other hand, is located within the state of Gujarat, along the coastal
area of the Arabian Sea. This union territory consists of four incontiguous pockets
or enclaves. Formerly Portuguese colonies, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman and
Diu were formally merged into the Union of India in 1961. The total population of
this union territory, according to the 2011 census, is 585,764, and it covers an
area of 603 sq km.
