Sentence D should use singular “was”, to go with singular pronoun “any one”. 

The correct expression in sentence A will be `absent themselves`.
Delete `as` in sentence B.
Replace `at` in sentence C with `on`.
Replace `than` in sentence D with `to`.  

We simply eliminate (1) & (2), being in the passive voice.  (3) uses roundabout language.  (4) is wordy. Hence, we`d prefer (5) as the answer choice.

Sentence A should use “have taken” in place of “took”.
Sentence B should use reflective pronoun “himself” in place of objective pronoun “him”.
Sentence D should use singular “it” in place of plural “they”

Sentence C should use “beside” in place of “besides”
Sentence D should not use auxiliary verb “should”.
