shielding is the method of protecting a
certain region of space or any sensitive
instrument from the influence of the
external field produced by an electric
charge instruments used for measuring
high voltage are protected from intense
electric field by enclosing them in
hollow conductors called Faraday's cages
Faraday's cage the fact that there is no
electric field inside a closed conductor
when it contains no charged bodies was
demonstrated by Michael Faraday he made
for himself a large wire cage supported
on insulators and sat inside with
electroscopes
which were electric field detectors
Faraday observed that there was no
deflection of leaves of the electroscope
placed inside the cage when the cage was
charged by an induction machine and also
he could sit comfortably inside the cage
the hollow conductors used to protect
any person or instruments from intense
electric fields are called Faraday cages
to prevent charges in one place from
setting up an electric field beyond
their immediate neighborhood surround
the charges with a Faraday cage and
connect the cage to the earth the charge
induced on the outside of the cage then
runs to the earth and there is no
external field when a cage is used to
seal something inside it it does not
have to be earth
let us see how sensitive instrument is
shielded from an external field the
instrument to be protected is placed
inside a conducting box usually made of
copper the external field pushes the
electrons on the conductor to one side
thus creating a net positive charge on
the other side the distribution of
charges produces an additional electric
field and according to Gauss law the
total field at every point inside the
conductor is zero does the conductor
protects the instrument from an external
field
the concept of electrostatic shielding
is used to shield the wires carrying
audio signals from the external electric
fields produced due to atmospheric
electricity or electric sparks
