Census of Goa

Goa Population 2011

• According to the 2011 Census, Goa's population was 1.459 million, up from 1.348 million in 2001. In 2011, there were 739,140 males and 719,405 females. The 2001 figures were 687,248 males and 660,420 females.
• The population growth rate in this decade was 8.23%, compared to 14.89% in the previous decade. Goa’s population constituted 0.12% of India's total population in 2011, down from 0.13% in 2001.
• The 2011 Census recorded a population of 1,457,723 in Goa, making up 0.12% of India’s total population. This was an increase of 110,055 people or 8.17% from the 2001 figure of 1,347,668.
• The population density in Goa is 394 people per square kilometer, which has increased from 364 people per square kilometer in 2001. North Goa has a higher population density of 471 people per square kilometer compared to South Goa’s 326.
• Of Goa’s 1,457,723 residents in 2011, 740,711 (50.81%) were male and 717,012 (49.19%) were female, resulting in a sex ratio of 968 females per 1,000 males. The literacy rate in Goa is 87.40%, with 92.81% for males and 81.84% for females.
• Panaji is the capital of Goa, while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. Margao, a notable city, still reflects Portuguese cultural influence from when the Portuguese arrived as traders in the mid-16th century.
• Goa is known for its low beer prices and, more recently, low fuel costs, which have also reduced the prices of wine and spirits due to low excise duties. Additionally, many Goans working abroad send money back to their families, contributing to the state’s economy.
• Goa’s medium-scale industries now include the production of pesticides, fertilizers, tires, footwear, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, canned fruits and vegetables, cashew nuts, textiles, and beverages. Many locals are migrating abroad or to larger cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Bangalore for better job opportunities, while workers from other states are moving to Goa for employment in the growing tourism sector.

Goa education rate

• With an 87% literacy rate, Goa ranks as the fourth highest in India, following Kerala, Tripura, and Mizoram.
• The student-to-teacher ratio in Goa improved significantly from 22 students per teacher in 2011-12 to 18 students per teacher in 2013-14.
• This improvement is attributed to simplified bureaucratic processes within the state.
• Last year, the Goa government introduced a policy to categorize government-aided schools into four classes based on their management efficiency.
• Well-managed schools were allowed to replace retiring teachers without needing government approval, which led to the addition of 500 teachers across the state.
• Government expenditure on education increased by 16%, which is the second highest among small states, just behind Meghalaya at 32%.
• This investment is expected to help the state achieve its goal of developing a skilled workforce for education-based industries, research and development centers, and financial services.

Sex proportion Goa

• According to the Economic Survey 2015-16, Goa has seen an increase in the sex ratio across all religious groups, particularly among Christians. The number of females per 1,000 males in Goa rose from 961 in 2001 to 973 in 2011, surpassing the national average of 960.
• Among Christians in Goa, the sex ratio is notably higher at 1,129 females per 1,000 males, showing a 2% increase.
• Data from the 2011 Census reveals that the sex ratio among Muslims in Goa is now 905 females per 1,000 males, up from 867 in 2001. For Hindus, the sex ratio is 929 females per 1,000 males, slightly improved from 918 in 2001.
• The Sikh community in Goa has a concerningly low sex ratio of 707 females per 1,000 males. The Buddhist community has a ratio of 908 females per 1,000 males, while the Jain community’s ratio is 912 females per 1,000 males.
• The overall sex ratio in Goa in 2011 was 973 females per 1,000 males, which is above the national average of 960. This represents an improvement from 961 in 2001.
• Taluka-wise data shows Salcete with the highest sex ratio of 1,025 females per 1,000 males, followed by Canacona with 1,005 females, Bardez with 980 females, Sanguem with 997 females, and Quepem with 994 females. The remaining six talukas have sex ratios below the state average.
• Census officials note that while Christians in Goa have a favorable female-to-male ratio, variations in the sex ratio among different religious groups may be influenced by migration patterns.
• The report also indicates that the sex ratio in South Goa has improved from 971 females per 1,000 males in 1981 to 986 in 2011. Conversely, North Goa’s sex ratio improved from 979-1,083 females per 1,000 males up to 1981 but declined to 963 in 2011, though it remains above the national average.
• Historically, Goa had a higher sex ratio of 1,091 females per 1,000 males before Liberation. This ratio decreased to 981 in 1971, 975 in 1981, and averaged 960 in 2001.
