Haryana Natural and Energy Resources | HPSC Preparation: All subjects - HPSC (Haryana) PDF Download

Energy is a crucial factor in infrastructure for sustained economic growth, playing a direct and significant role in revenue generation, employment opportunities, and improving quality of life. In Haryana, the state faces challenges due to limited natural energy sources, such as low hydro generation potential, distant coal mines, and limited forest areas. The state relies on thermal generation and jointly owned hydro projects for its energy needs.

Installed Capacity:

  • The total installed capacity in 2016-17 was 11,102 MW.
  • Power availability increased from 25,125.3 MUs in 2006-2007 to 40,277.9 MUs in 2013-2014.

Power Plants in Haryana:

Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant:

  • Located in Yamunanagar district.
  • Coal-based with a 600 MW capacity.
  • Jointly constructed by Reliance Energy Limited and Shanghai Electric.

Western Yamuna Canal Hydel Electricity Project:

  • Proposal submitted in 1977 for four 2x8 MW power houses.

Panipat Thermal Power Station (PTPS):

  • Commissioned on November 1, 1979.
  • Total installed capacity of 1360 MW, the largest in Haryana.
  • Bifurcated into PTPS-1 and PTPS-2 for better control.

Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Project (RGTPP):

  • Commissioned on August 24, 2010, with a capacity of 1200 MW.
  • Noteworthy for its low cost of Rs 3.19 crore per MW.

Kakori Micro Hydel Project:

  • Ultra low head hydro energy project with four units of 100 KW each.

Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project (IGSTPP):

  • Coal-based super thermal power project in Jhajjar, executed by NTPC in collaboration with Delhi and Haryana governments.

Mahatma Gandhi Thermal Power Project in Jhajjar:

  • 1,320 MW (2 x 660 MW) coal-based power project using supercritical technology.
  • Notable for voluntary installation of Flue Gas Desulphurisation.

Faridabad Thermal Power Plant:

  • Located in Faridabad with an installed capacity of 180 MW.
  • Initially commissioned in 1974, subsequently de-rated to 55 MW.

Non-Conventional Resources:

  • Despite earning awards for energy conservation, Haryana needs further development in non-conventional sources.

Nuclear Power Plant:

  • Foundation stone laid on January 13, 2014, in Gorakhpur.
  • Total installed capacity of 2800 MW by NPCIL.

Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM):

  • Aims to achieve grid parity by 2022 and with coal-based thermal power by 2030.
  • Targets 1000 MW by 2013, 3000 MW by 2017, and 20,000 MW by 2022.

Solar Energy:

  • Haryana has a solar insolation level of 5.5 to 6.5 KWH per sq m with about 320 sunny days annually.

Wind Energy:

  • Untapped wind energy potential in Morni and Aravalli hills.
  • Wind Monitoring Stations set up to assess the potential.

Haryana Solar Power Policy, 2014:

  • Aims to promote green and clean power generation from solar energy.
  • Focuses on productive use of non-agricultural lands and employment generation.

Renewable Energy Policy, 2005:

  • Aims for 10% (500 MW) capacity addition through renewable energy by 2012.
  • Promotes biomass, co-generation, small hydro, wind, solar, and waste-to-energy projects.

Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC):

  • Established in 1998 to balance the interests of consumers, power entities, and generation companies.
  • Unbundled Haryana State Electricity Board into HPGCL and HVPNL.

Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA):

  • State Nodal Agency coordinating renewable energy activities.
  • Responsible for project approvals and monitoring for all Renewable Energy Power Projects in Haryana.
