Introduction

Most of the ethnic groups in Haryana belong to the categories of Indo-Aryan and Indo-Dravidian. Haryana's overall tribal population encompasses various interconnected agricultural communities. Noteworthy tribal groups in Haryana consist of the Jats, Rajputs, Ahirs, Rors, and Gujjars. The majority of these tribes engage in both agricultural activities and trade and commerce. Despite their shared geographical location, these tribes exhibit distinct cultural, traditional, and customary practices that set them apart from each other.

Tribes of Haryana

Jat Tribes of Haryana: Serving as a prominent ethnic community in the region, the Jats hold considerable importance in the state of Haryana. The Jats are further subdivided into various major and minor clans and are predominantly concentrated in rural areas. Engaging in trade, commerce, and the production of local goods, the Jats contribute significantly to the economic landscape. Particularly prevalent in the districts of Hisar and Karnal, the Jats form a substantial portion of the population and are also prominently present in Ambala.

  • Rajput Tribes in Haryana: A substantial portion of the state is inhabited by Rajputs, who trace their lineage to Kshatriyas. The Chauhans and Mandhars are the two oldest Rajput clans that have settled in Haryana, with additional clans including Badgujar, Bachas, Tunwar, Gur, and others.
  • Ahir Tribes in Haryana: The majority of Haryana's Ahir population is concentrated in the Mahendragarh district. Notably comparable to the Jats due to their numerous clans, the Ahirs form a significant community in the state.
  • Ror Tribes in Haryana: The Ror tribe, though a minor one, is primarily located in the Karnal district. Engaged in agriculture and related industries, the Ror community contributes to the economic activities of the region.
  • Gujjar Tribes in Haryana: Gujjars, belonging to the Kshatriya and Brahmin castes, are predominantly situated in the villages of Khadar and Canal in Karnal district. Artisans, crafters, and others supporting agricultural operations constitute a distinct category within the Gujjar community.
  • Harijan Tribes in Haryana: Harijans make up approximately one-fifth of the state's population, with diverse groups such as Chamars, Chhuras, Dhanaks, and Julahas being part of this category.
  • Bania Tribes in Haryana: The Banias, traditionally the dominant trading class in the state, consist mainly of the Aggarwalas, Oswals, and Maheshwaris. Despite their relatively small numbers, they wield significant influence in both industry and politics.
  • Meo Tribes in Haryana: The Meos represent a harmonious blend of Hinduism and Islam. Primarily located in Mewat, encompassing the hill country region including Gurgaon, Alwar, and Bharatpur, they derive their name from the Mewat region where they predominantly reside.
