Railway Transport in Haryana:

  • During the formation of the state, Haryana had a total railway line length of 3245.11 km. This included 2985.55 km of meter gauge and 259.56 km of narrow gauge.
  • Rewari Railway Station is the oldest railway station in Haryana.
  • Presently, the state has approximately 4439.16 km of railway tracks, with 4178.31 km being meter gauge lines and 260.85 km being narrow gauge lines.
  • The first Private Sector Rail Project in Haryana was initiated in the Gurugram district.
  • The rail network in Haryana is categorized into three Railway Zones and five Railway Divisions.
  • The three zones are North Western Railway Zone (Bikaner and Jaipur divisions), Northern Railway Zone (Delhi and Ambala divisions), and North Central Railway Zone (Agra division).
  • The Ambala division of Indian Railways, with its headquarters in Ambala, is the headquarters of the Northern Railway Zone, covering 1118.53 km of railway line, including 96.54 km of narrow gauge line.

  • Haryana is well-connected to all parts of India through a broad gauge railway line, with Chandigarh serving as the main railway station.
  • Major railway stations in Haryana include Ambala Cantonment, Ambala City, Bahadurgarh, Ballabhgarh, Bawal, Bhiwani, Bhiwani City, Faridabad, Gurugram, Hisar, Jagadhri, Jakhal Junction, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Loharu, Mahendragarh, Palwal, Sirsa, Sonipat, and Kalka.

Three important rail routes in Haryana are as follows:


Delhi-Rewari-Alwar Rail Route:

  • This is the oldest rail route in Haryana, passing through the southern part of the state.
  • The Delhi-Rewari rail route, established in 1873, is part of the Jaipur division of the North West Railway Zone.
  • Rewari Junction, established in 1873, is the biggest and oldest railway junction in Haryana.
  • The route includes branches connecting various places, such as Bhiwani, Rohtak, Narnaul, Ringas, Kanina, Mahendragarh, Satnali, Loharu, Dadri, Hansi, and Bhatinda.

Delhi-Ambala-Amritsar Route:

  • This rail route passes through the eastern part of the state, connecting Delhi to Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, and reaching up to Amritsar in Punjab.
  • Ambala Cantonment is the main junction, serving as the headquarters of the Northern Railway zone.
  • The line is electrified, with Ambala being the 5th busiest route in India.

Delhi-Jind-Firozpur Route:

  • This rail route connects Delhi to the central and western parts of the state, including Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Jind, Narwana, Tohana, and Jakhal, up to Firozpur in Punjab.
  • Major railway junctions on this route include Rohtak, Jind, and Jakhal.
  • The Rewari-Jhajjar-Rohtak line connects this route with the Delhi-Rewari route.

  • Connects Delhi-Jind-Ferozepur rail route with Delhi-Ambala-Amritsar rail route at Panipat junction.

Narwana-Kaithal-Kurukshetra Link Rail Route:

  • Connects Narwana Junction to Kurukshetra Junction via Kaithal.

Railway Heritage Museum, Haryana: 

  • Located in Rewari district.
  • Initially built for steam locomotives; converted into a heritage museum in 2002.
  • Only steam locomotive museum in the country.
  • Steam engines used in films like 'Gadar' and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.'

Metro Railway Network in Haryana:


Delhi-Gurugram Metro Rail:
  • Started in Gurugram in 2016.
  • Connects Southern Delhi to HUDA city centre in Gurugram.
  • Second-longest metro line in Delhi.
  • Future plans include extending the line to Cyber city Gurugram and Dwarka Sector-21.

Rapid Metro Rail, Gurugram:

  • Fully elevated metro rail system in Gurugram since 2013.
  • Privately owned and operated.
  • Links major satellite towns like Faridabad, Gurugram, Bahadurgarh, Kundli, etc.

Delhi-Faridabad Metro Rail Route:

  • Connects Delhi to Faridabad in three phases.
  • Violet line connecting Kashmiri Gate to Mujesar with plans for further extension.

Mundka-Bahadurgarh Metro Rail Route:

  • Green line connecting Delhi to Bahadurgarh.
  • Completed in June 2018 with 7 metro stations.

Narela-Kundli Metro Rail Route:

  • Linking Narela in North Delhi to Kundli in Sonipat.
  • Estimated cost of ₹968.2 crore, expected to be completed by 2022.

  • Diamond quadrilateral high-speed rail network.
  • Eastern dedicated freight corridor (passing through Ambala and Yamunanagar).

Gurugram Airstrip:

  • Also called Bhondsi or Silokhera airstrip, included in the UDAN-Regional Connectivity scheme.

Narnaul Airstrip:

  • Used by Rajiv Gandhi National Centre for Aero Sports, inaugurated in 2010.

Ambala Air Force Station:

  • Air base built in 1948, used for military and government flights.
