Using Inverted Commas

  • When writing, inverted commas or speech marks should be placed before and after direct speech, enclosing the spoken words.
  • Examples:
    • "I'm hungry," she complained.
    • "What's for tea?" she asked. "Delicious ants!" her mum replied.
  • Punctuation marks like question marks, full stops, and exclamation marks should go inside the speech marks.

Direct Speech

  • Direct speech involves quoting the exact words spoken by a person inside inverted commas.
  • Examples:
    • "I'm pleased to have raised so much money," said Lucy.

Punctuating Direct Speech

  • A key rule in punctuating direct speech is to start a new line for a new speaker.
  • Remember to capitalize the first letter of each piece of speech and place punctuation marks (question marks, full stops, and exclamation marks) inside the quotation marks.
  • If the speaker is named before the speech, use a comma before the opening quotation marks.
    For example:
    • Tom exclaimed, “What a wonderful day!”
