Introduction

The words in, on, under, and near help us understand where something is placed. These words are called position words or prepositions.

For example:

• The ball is on the table.
• The cat is under the chair.

These words tell us where something or someone is.

When to Use In, On, Under, and Near?

1. In – When Something is Inside

We use in when something is inside a place.

Examples:

• The apples are in the basket.
• The fish is in the water.
• I live in a big house.

2. On – When Something is on Top of Something

We use on when something is above and touching a surface.

Examples:

• The book is on the table.
• The clock is on the wall.
• The cat is on the bed.

3. Under – When Something is Below

We use under when something is below or beneath something.

4. Near – When Something is Close to Another Thing

We use near when something is close but not touching.
