Back in 1917, the Hyderabad Nizam laid the cornerstone for the Pocharam Project in Pocharam village of Nagireddipet mandal, situated on the Manchippa brook, initially part of the united Nizamabad district, presently known as Kamareddy district.
  • Constructed at a cost of Rs 27.11 lakh with a capacity of 2.423 tmc, the project was finalized in 1922 to cater to the water demands of Nagieddipet and Yellareddy mandals in Kamareddy district, along with the Medak mandal in the Medak district. For the past 95 years, Pocharam has been instrumental in meeting the irrigation and drinking water necessities of the residents of Nizamabad and Medak districts. Crafted by the Nizam government using limestone, the project spans 1.7 km in length, featuring a 21 ft high bund across the Manchippa brook, surrounded by 58 km of intricate canals and 73 distributaries.
  • Farmers have been cultivating 10,500 acres under this project. Initially, the project was constructed with a capacity of 2.423 tmc, but due to silt accumulation, the project's water storage capacity decreased to 1.82 tmc. The project distributaries are divided into two zones: A and B. Zone A comprises distributaries 1 to 48, while Zone B comprises distributaries 49 to 73. During the Kharif season, water is utilized from both Zone A and Zone B, whereas during the Rabi season, only one zone is utilized, with the zone being alternated every year.
  • The total water capacity of the project is 1.82 tmc, with a Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 14.64 feet. Currently, the project has reached its FRL level. Project officials have released 277 cusecs to the project canals and an additional 262 tmc into the Manchppa Brook.
  • The Pocharam Project attracts tourists from Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the Pocharam Project and Sanctuary from districts such as Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Nanded, and Gulbarga. The Pocharam Sanctuary is home to various types of birds and animals. The Nizam government constructed a guest house near the Pocharam project to accommodate tourists visiting the area.
