Maternal Health and Child Nutrition

• Specific concerns are raised about the relatively high maternal mortality rate (MMR) in certain districts like Dharwad, Chikballapur, Bidar, Hassan, Haveri, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, and Chamarajanagar.
• A significant percentage of pregnant women aged 15-49 in these areas are reported to be anaemic or malnourished, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions.

Government Recommendations and Targets

• The government is urged to uplift at least 20% of the population from poverty in Yadgir, Raichur, and Kalaburagi to reduce Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) rates.
• Focus is advised on housing and agricultural interventions to enhance farm productivity in these regions.
• Special supplementary nutrition for 90 days is proposed for anaemic children in anganwadis to boost haemoglobin levels, requiring an estimated expenditure of Rs 85 crore over five years to combat child anaemia.

Health Progress and Rankings

• Encouragingly, life expectancy has seen an increase to 69.5 years, and maternal mortality rate (MMR) has decreased to 69 per lakh live births from 83 in 2020.
• A significant step forward is the estimation of Human Development Index (HDI) and Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) at the taluk level, with Mangaluru taluk securing the top position, followed by Bengaluru South.
