Lesson 24: Playing Songs in the Key of G Major - Part 1 Video Lecture | Piano Tutorials Course: Beginners to Advance - Class 6

back again for a piano lesson 25 getting
pretty far along here so today we're
gonna be doing as we're going to be
playing three examples in the key of G
how many sharps does the key of G have
there's a question for you think about
it for a second it has one sharp if you
don't know what I'm talking about go
back and look at the circle of fifths
the theory lessons I think three four
five and six I think or maybe four five
and six they go over the circle of
fifths and how to interpret these
different key signatures and how to
figure those out so anyway here comes
the lesson alright folks so today we're
going to talk about actually we're going
to play some examples that are in the
key of G if you remember from the circle
of fifths theory lesson which is lessons
three four and five I believe and maybe
six yeah six to that the key of G has
one sharp and that's going to be F sharp
so remember that throughout all of these
examples every f we play even though it
doesn't tell you is going to be sharp so
that's something you have to remember if
you don't remember then it won't sound
quite right so here we have our first
example we'll go over the right hand
first and then the left hand as usual um
this one I decided to write in three
four we don't know we haven't done a few
too many pieces in three four but it's
really not that complicated compared to
four four there's just three beats in a
measure instead of four quarter note
still gets one beat very easy so we have
one sharp there if you see that's F
sharp and we have that P there what does
that P mean hopefully you remember from
the last lesson or two you hopefully
remember that that P means piano or that
means to play the piano softly so let's
take a look here so because we're in the
key of G now this isn't a hundred
percent true but it's true most of the
time that our hands instead of being
over C so
see remember that or leftmost finger for
each hand is going to be on C and you're
going to lay your fingers accordingly
well now we're going to be over G so
you're gonna have your thumb right hand
over G pinky left hand over G remember
leftmost finger so it's different for
each hand over G like this and that's G
position so let's take a look here we
have our right hand we have G with one
day with to be with three and then the
next measure we have a with to be with
three see you with 4 and the next one we
have B with 3 a with 1 and I did this
for a reason and then F sharp with 3 and
then G with one so that weird fingering
in the next-to-last measures basically
just so you don't run out of fingers for
the end of the song on because if you
did say we have that next to last
measure we have three would be two on a
if you did one on f-sharp I mean I guess
you could work it out that to hit two
like I said about the fingering there's
more than one way to skin a cat the most
or one more way more than one way to do
things sorry so the most important thing
is having the correct finger on the
correct note and to not run out of
fingers here's the thing as if you're
playing say the G Major scale we've
talked about this with the C major scale
just play it without thinking about the
fingers you're not gonna be able to
finish the rest of the scale without
physically picking up your hand and
moving it so it's more of a so the song
flows a little bit better or the melody
of the song in the top line flows better
that's why we use the fingering but
certainly there's more than one way of
doing things
so I may agree some me not that's the
way I rate my fingering sometimes it
just depends on how I feel some days
it's a little different than others but
I always try to do what's logical and
feels comfortable for me so down here we
have let's say we have a G major chord
here with the left hand so
fingers remember that the bottom number
corresponds to the bottom note middle to
middle note and top to top note and then
the next chord and this one the next to
last measure we've got to be careful
because we have an F sharp in here the
top then the last chord here with five D
with three and G with one so let's play
this thing hands together if you notice
I've stopped writing in the note names
it's because by now you should probably
be able to either play without the note
names or be able to write them in
yourself if you need to write a few in
that's okay
I recommend getting away from that
because eventually you're just gonna
have to be able to read re actually read
the music without that little crutch I'm
in the beginning that's fine but as we
get further and further along you might
not want to do that as much so hands
together let's see what we got
remember we're gonna be playing piano
so a little faster and should sound like
this

example2 let's take a look at the right
hand here we have the only difference in
this one well either the other than the
notes is that we have f4 Forte so that's
gonna tell us to play loud so here we go
here's the right hand so fluency so
that's the first measure and then you
have five and/or one on f-sharp sorry
and then you can either play I would
play two on G even though I've won there
it's like I actually kind of high Burke
that rule I was talking about cuz if you
do whenever you're jumping your thumb
around it kind of breaks up the melody
and once we get into more complicated
examples I'll explain you know more and
more why that's important you'll
probably see more and more of what I'm
talking about but the next last measure
again goes so not too bad let's just try
it from beginning to end
there we go so here's the left hand same
chords as before so I'm just gonna
breeze right through this measure to
measure three remember we have f-sharp
the last chord so hands together
we try one more time
so let me count this one out loud this
is how you'll count this one is you're
gonna go I'm gonna count what I'm gonna
count is the right hand since that's
that has the most movement to it there
you go that's how you'll approach that
one let's go to the next one final one
here's the example three this one looks
a little different a little more
movement with the left hand
not a whole lot it's so very easy
example especially once you get used to
it so right hand you've G with 1 G 2
then you're gonna kind of move your
thumb down third measure then you got
this is the fourth measure then you got
next / measure you have F sharp
Jigen you're gonna cross underneath one
so left hand you have chain five
I'll be a three
now here you're gonna want to stretch
your hand because you need to hit D down
here but first you need to hit this G so
you hit D with one and by the way this
is the fourth measure D with one G with
two I'm do with five notice how because
we stretch there that gives us a know
that D down there and then we got and
you're gonna jump your hand down
so there we go let's try it hands
together remember that we have P for
piano oh let me count this
so it was a little bit off it's kind of
hard but with my setup to count look and
play at the same time but because I have
to kind of tilt my head to see the music
but one more time so you gonna go
to
there we go I rose I didn't use my
fingering there at the end like I said I
kind of my head turned but I think you
get the idea that's generally what
they're gonna sound like I'm gonna play
it one more time I realized I forgot to
add in the Forte there so you want a
bigger difference in the dynamics
there we go so those are all three
examples the key of G and how to count
those and play them so I'll see you guys

sharp at least hopefully you said that
