India is Our Country

India is a big and beautiful country. It is our motherland, and we all love it very much. People who live in India are called Indians. 

• Our country is famous for its rich history, festivals, languages, and culture. 
• Even though people in different parts of India speak different languages and follow different traditions, we all live together like one big family.

New Delhi - The Capital of India

The capital of India is New Delhi. It is an important city where the President and Prime Minister live. New Delhi is a busy and modern city with historical places, offices, and markets.

It is also home to many important buildings, such as:

• Parliament House – where laws are made.

• Rashtrapati Bhavan – the home of the President of India.

• India Gate – a famous monument built to honour soldiers.

States and Union Territories

India is a vast country, and to make it easier to govern, it is divided into 28 states and 8 Union Territories.

• Each state has its own language, food, dress, and traditions.
• The largest state by area is Rajasthan.
• The smallest state by area is Goa.
• Some well-known states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
• Union Territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands are directly governed by the central government.

Even though we have so many states and cultures, we all belong to one India!

Our National Symbols

India has special symbols that represent our country. These symbols make us feel proud and remind us of the greatness of our nation.

National Flag - The Tricolour

Our national flag is called the Tricolour (Tiranga). It has three colours:

• Saffron at the top, which stands for courage and strength.
• White in the middle, which stands for peace and truth.
• Green at the bottom, which stands for growth and prosperity.
• In the center, there is a blue Ashoka Chakra with 24 spokes, which represents progress and movement.

National Animal - The Royal Bengal Tiger

The Royal Bengal Tiger is our national animal. It is strong, fast, and powerful. Tigers live in forests and are known for their hunting skills. They are an important part of India’s wildlife and need to be protected.

National Bird - The Peacock

The Peacock is our national bird. It is a colourful bird with beautiful feathers. When it rains, the peacock spreads its feathers and dances, which looks very pretty.

National Flower - The Lotus

The Lotus is our national flower. It is a pink flower that grows in water. It is a symbol of purity and beauty.

National Fruit - The Mango

The Mango is our national fruit. It is sweet and juicy. Mangoes are called the "King of Fruits" and are loved by people of all ages.

National Sport - Hockey

Hockey is the national sport of India. It is a game played with a stick and a ball. India has won many gold medals in hockey at the Olympics and is known for its great hockey players.

Other Important National Symbols

• National Tree – Banyan Tree (symbol of strength and wisdom).
• National River – Ganga (most sacred river in India).
• National Song – Vande Mataram (written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay).
• National Anthem – Jana Gana Mana (written by Rabindranath Tagore).

Our Duty as Indians

India is our home, and it is our duty to take care of it. We should:

• Respect our national symbols like the flag and anthem.
• Keep our country clean by not littering.
