Answer:

August 13, 2012

Dear Ranjit,
I am sorry to inform you that my house was burgled last week when I was on holiday.  Burglars must have known from the accumulated newspapers that I had gone away. When I came back last Sunday, I found the back door lock had been broken. I might have forgotten to bolt the back door from inside. Burglars could have entered from the back side. My room was ransacked. They took my laptop and other valuables. I should have deposited the jewellery in the locker of the bank to avoid this loss. I should have informed my neighbours also about my week long trip.
Well, I have registered an FIR with the police. The police is investigating the case. Hope burglars would be caught very soon.

Yours truly
XYZ.

FAQs on Modals NCERT Solutions - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English- Class 9

1. What are modals in English grammar and how are they used?
Ans. Modals are a type of auxiliary verbs that express various shades of meaning such as ability, possibility, necessity, permission, and obligation in a sentence. They are used to modify the main verb in a sentence and are followed by the base form of the verb. For example, "can," "could," "may," "might," "shall," "should," "will," "would," "must," "ought to," etc.
2. What is the difference between "can" and "could" in English grammar?
Ans. "Can" and "could" are both modal verbs that express ability or possibility, but "can" is used in present situations while "could" is used in past situations. "Can" is used to talk about general ability or present possibility, whereas "could" is used to talk about past ability or past possibility. For example, "I can swim" (present ability) and "I could swim when I was younger" (past ability).
3. How do we use "must" and "have to" in English grammar?
Ans. "Must" and "have to" are both used to express obligation or necessity in English grammar. However, "must" is used when the obligation comes from the speaker or is based on the speaker's opinion, whereas "have to" is used when the obligation comes from an external source or is based on rules, laws, or other people's expectations. For example, "I must finish my homework" (personal obligation) and "I have to go to work" (external obligation).
4. What is the difference between "may" and "might" in English grammar?
Ans. "May" and "might" are both modal verbs used to express possibility or permission, but "may" is used to talk about present or future possibilities while "might" is used to talk about past possibilities. "May" is also used to ask for permission, whereas "might" is used to express a smaller or more remote possibility. For example, "She may come to the party tonight" (present possibility) and "He might have seen the movie last night" (past possibility).
5. Can we use modals in the negative form?
Ans. Yes, modals can be used in the negative form by adding "not" after the modal verb. For example, "I cannot swim" or "I won't be able to come to the party." The negative form of modals is used to express inability, impossibility, or to deny permission or obligation.
