FAQs on NCERT Textbook- Shapes and Space - Mathematics for Class 1: NCERT

1. What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?
Ans. 2D shapes are flat figures that only have two dimensions, length and width, while 3D shapes are solid figures that have three dimensions, length, width, and height. Examples of 2D shapes include squares, triangles, and circles, while examples of 3D shapes include cubes, spheres, and pyramids.
2. How can we calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes?
Ans. The area of a shape can be calculated by multiplying its length and width for 2D shapes, and multiplying its length, width, and height for 3D shapes. The perimeter of a shape can be calculated by adding the lengths of all its sides. For example, the perimeter of a square can be calculated by adding all its sides, while the area can be calculated by multiplying its length and width.
3. What is symmetry in shapes?
Ans. Symmetry is the property of a shape or object that remains unchanged when it is reflected or rotated. A shape is said to have line symmetry if it can be divided into two equal halves that are mirror images of each other. For example, a square has four lines of symmetry, while a rectangle has two.
4. What are congruent shapes?
Ans. Congruent shapes are identical in size, shape, and orientation. Two shapes are said to be congruent if one can be transformed into the other by translation, rotation, and reflection. For example, two squares that are the same size and shape are congruent, while a square and a rectangle are not.
5. How can we identify different types of angles in shapes?
Ans. Angles are formed when two lines intersect or when a line intersects with a plane. There are several types of angles, including acute, right, obtuse, and straight. An acute angle is less than 90 degrees, a right angle is exactly 90 degrees, an obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees, and a straight angle is exactly 180 degrees. We can use a protractor to measure angles in a shape and identify their types.
