 The Frog
Let us Recite
I sit in ponds and in the rain,
Or hop about in a muddy drain.
As a tadpole, I swim with cheer,
A tiny fish-like thing, so clear!
I flick my tongue to catch my food,
It works so fast—now that’s quite good!
I live on land and water too,
In places damp with drops of dew.
My colours match the plants and trees,
I hide so well in grass and leaves!
But snakes are near, I must beware,
Or else they’ll catch me unaware!
I croak my songs, they sound so loud,
Yet in my pond, I feel so proud.
I hop around, I jump so high,
Up I go into the sky!
With webbed feet, I swim with ease,
And leap so high in joyful breeze!

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: The Frog - English Santoor Class 5 - New NCERT

1. What are the main characteristics of frogs as described in the article?
Ans.Frogs are amphibians known for their unique features such as a smooth, moist skin that helps in respiration, long hind legs for jumping, and bulging eyes. They have a distinct life cycle that includes stages from egg to tadpole to adult frog, showcasing their adaptability to both aquatic and terrestrial environments.
2. How do frogs contribute to the ecosystem?
Ans.Frogs play a crucial role in their ecosystems as both predators and prey. They help control insect populations by feeding on them, which in turn supports the balance of the food web. Additionally, frogs serve as indicators of environmental health due to their sensitivity to changes in their habitats.
3. What is the significance of the frog's life cycle?
Ans.The frog's life cycle is significant as it demonstrates metamorphosis, a process where the frog undergoes dramatic physical changes. Starting as eggs in water, they develop into tadpoles with gills, then gradually transform into adult frogs capable of living on land. This cycle is important for understanding developmental biology and the adaptation of species.
4. What are some common threats to frog populations mentioned in the article?
Ans.Common threats to frog populations include habitat destruction due to urbanization and agriculture, pollution of water bodies, climate change affecting their breeding cycles, and diseases such as chytridiomycosis. These factors have led to a decline in many frog species, highlighting the need for conservation efforts.
5. How can we help in the conservation of frogs?
Ans.Conserving frogs can be achieved through various actions such as protecting their natural habitats, reducing the use of harmful pesticides, participating in local conservation projects, and raising awareness about the importance of frogs in ecosystems. Educating others about these practices can help ensure the survival of frog populations.
