Common Errors & Rules to Spot Them
Parts of Speech

Noun Usage and Verb Agreement
Singular Form, Plural Meaning
Nouns with singular form but plural 
meaning require plural verbs. 
Examples: cattle, people, police.
Incorrect: The Police has come.
Correct: The Police have come.
Always Plural Nouns
Nouns with inherently plural form 
take plural verbs. Examples: scissors, 
trousers, spectacles.
Incorrect: The scissors is kept on the 
table.
Correct: The scissors are kept on the 
table.
Measure Nouns
Numbers before measure nouns keep 
singular form when followed by 
another noun. Examples: meter, year, 
dozen.
Incorrect: This is a nine-meters cloth.
Correct: This is a nine-meter cloth.
Usage of Nouns
Collective nouns (public, team, 
committee) are singular when acting 
as a unit.
Incorrect: The public were unanimous 
in their opinion.
Correct: The public was unanimous in 
its opinion.
Sentences with 'each of' , 'one of' , 
'none of'
These phrases require plural nouns.
Incorrect: She is one of the less 
important people in the office.
Correct: She is one of the least 
important people in the office.
Incorrect: Each of the players 
performed well in the match.
Collective Category Nouns
Collective nouns take plural verbs 
when members act individually (not as 
a unit).
Incorrect: The jury was divided in its 
opinion.
Correct: The jury were divided in their 
opinion.
