Buddhist Stupa Dhulikatta

Peddapalli (పెద్దపల్లి) | Telangana State PSC (TSPSC): Preparation Course - TSPSC (Telangana)

  • The Buddhist monastic complex situated in Vadkapur and Dhulikatta villages, positioned along the Hussaini vagu's right and left banks, is approximately 30 kilometers away from Karimnagar. Through excavations, various elements such as a Buddhist Stupa and fortification walls were unearthed. An inscription in Brahmi on a slab within this Stupa, dating back paleographically to the 2nd century B.C., was discovered. This Stupa, affiliated with the Hinayana sect of Buddhism, refrained from depicting Buddha anthropomorphically. Instead, Buddha was symbolized through items like his Chatra, Padukas, throne with Swastika, and Pillar of fire.
  • The Stupa comprises a lower pradakshana patha, a circular drum featuring ayaka platforms on the east, west, north, and south cardinal directions, along with a dome. These ayaka platforms extend from the main drum. During the early Satavahana era, the Stupa was adorned with intricately carved limestone slabs, contemporaneous with the Barhut Stupa from the early Sunga period. Notable among these limestone slabs is the depiction of Naga Muchilinda, a snake guarding the Buddha.

  • A fort situated on the Ramagiri hillocks, near Begumpet village in Kamanpur mandal along the PWD road leading to Manthani. This renowned fort, constructed from stone and featuring numerous bastions, sprawls across an extensive area spanning several kilometers. Ramagiri hill, encompassing a vast expanse, is famed for its picturesque natural environs teeming with rare plant species and various medicinal roots. Throughout history, the fort played a pivotal role, starting from ancient times up to the era of the Asaf Jahis.
  • In the past, the fort was under the dominion of Gundaraja of Manthani and Edaraja of Ramagundam. They faced defeat at the hands of Kakati Prola II, leading to the entire region of Polavasa, Manthani, and Ramagundam falling under Kakatiya rule. Post the decline of the Kakatiyas, Musunuri Kapayanayaka seized Orugallu and appointed Muppabhupala as the ruler of Sabbinadu, establishing his capital at Ramagiri during the 14th century AD. Subsequently, the Bahamani Sultan Ahmed Shah I (1422-1436 AD) launched an invasion of the Telangana region in 1433 AD, eventually capturing the Ramagiri fort. Following the rule of the Qutb Shahis from the Golconda dynasty, the fort came under the authority of the Mughals before ultimately falling under the control of the Asaf Jahis and their Deshmukhs.
