Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched on May 1, 2016, by the Government of India, is a flagship social welfare scheme aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. The scheme promotes the use of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a safer, cleaner, and healthier alternative to traditional fuels like firewood, coal, and cow dung, which cause indoor air pollution and health hazards. PMUY seeks to empower women, improve their health, and reduce environmental degradation by providing free LPG connections to eligible households. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in collaboration with public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) like IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has been a transformative initiative in providing clean cooking fuel to millions of poor households, significantly improving the health, empowerment, and quality of life for women. By achieving near-universal LPG coverage, PMUY has reduced indoor air pollution, promoted environmental sustainability, and supported financial inclusion. Despite challenges like low refill rates and supply chain gaps, the scheme’s expansion under PMUY 2.0, digital integration, and focus on awareness are driving its success. PMUY remains a cornerstone of India’s social welfare and clean energy agenda, contributing to gender equity, health improvements, and sustainable development.
