History

• Rangareddy district was established on 15th August 1978 by separating a portion of Hyderabad urban taluk and merging rural and urban areas of the remaining taluks of Hyderabad. The district was initially called Hyderabad (Rural) and later renamed Konda Venkata Rangareddy district and then Rangareddy district, in honor of the late Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, K.V. Rangareddy.
• The district's history is intertwined with the various kingdoms that thrived in the Deccan during medieval and modern times. The Kakatiyas of Warangal were the primary rulers in this region from 1150-1323 A.D. Following their decline, the Bahmani Sultans controlled the Deccan for approximately two centuries. Subsequently, the Barid Shahi Kingdom emerged but eventually diminished around 1609 A.D.
• The Qutub Shahi dynasty of Golconda (1512-1687) made significant contributions to the region, particularly under the rule of Muhammad Quli, who laid the foundation of Hyderabad city in 1589 A.D. However, Golconda fell to Aurangzeb in 1687, leading to the establishment of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty and the autonomy of the Deccan. This marked the transition from the Medieval period to the Modern era, signifying the end of Mughal rule in the region.
• Asaf Jah-I, the founder of the Nizam dynasty, played a pivotal role in shaping the Hyderabad State. The title of Nizam became hereditary, symbolizing the rulers of the state. The district remained part of the Nizam's dominion until its integration into the Indian Union in 1948. Finally, it became part of the enlarged state of Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956, following the States' Reorganisation Act.

• The district is situated in the central part of the Deccan Plateau.
• It is positioned between 16° 30' and 18° 20' North Latitude, and 77° 30' and 79° 30' East Longitudes.

• Osman Sagar, located in Hyderabad, India, is a reservoir spanning approximately 46 square kilometers with a reservoir area of around 29 square kilometers. The reservoir has a total level of 1,790 feet and a capacity of 3.9 thousand million cubic feet. It was formed by damming the Musi River in 1920 to address the need for additional drinking water following the devastating Great Musi Flood of 1908. This initiative was undertaken during the reign of Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, hence the naming of the reservoir after him.
• As a popular tourist spot, Osman Sagar attracts visitors, especially during the monsoon season when the reservoir is at its fullest. The area features parks, resorts, and an amusement park, making it a significant attraction. While the reservoir once supplied drinking water to Hyderabad, the city's growing population has outpaced its capacity to meet the increasing water demand.
