Ans. The process of changing a solid into a liquid is called melting. When heat is applied to a solid, its particles gain energy, vibrate faster, and overcome the forces of attraction between them. As a result, the solid particles break free from their fixed positions and start moving more freely, forming a liquid.
3. What are the main characteristics of gases?
Ans. Gases have the following main characteristics: - They have no fixed shape or volume and can expand to fill any container they are placed in. - They can be easily compressed due to the large spaces between their particles. - The particles in gases are in constant random motion and move freely in all directions. - Gases are highly affected by changes in temperature and pressure.
4. How does the arrangement of particles differ in solids, liquids, and gases?
Ans. In solids, the particles are closely packed and arranged in a regular pattern. They vibrate about fixed positions and have strong forces of attraction between them. In liquids, the particles are close together but are not arranged in a regular pattern. They can move past each other but still have some forces of attraction. In gases, the particles are far apart and have no regular arrangement. They move randomly and have weak forces of attraction.
5. What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Ans. Evaporation and boiling are both processes of converting a liquid into a gas, but they differ in the way they occur. Evaporation occurs at the surface of a liquid when its particles gain enough energy to escape into the air. It can happen at any temperature, even below the boiling point of the liquid. Boiling, on the other hand, occurs throughout the entire liquid when its temperature reaches the boiling point. It involves the rapid formation of bubbles within the liquid due to the conversion of the liquid particles into gas.
