What is Subtraction?

Imagine you have a plate full of 4 yummy cookies 

But your friends come over and want to share. They take away 2 cookies. 

How many cookies are left on the plate? That's where subtraction comes in!

Subtraction means taking away something. We use a special symbol called "minus" (-) to show it. 

Let's see how it works with pictures!

We started with 4 cookies, your friend took 2 cookies and counted the remaining 2. So, 2 cookies are left in the basket!

We can write this as a math sentence:

4 - 2 = 2

Here's another fun way to think about subtraction

Imagine 4 birds were singing on a tree. Then, one flew away. How many birdies are left? There are 3 now! 

If another one flies away, there will be only 2 left.

Subtraction can be like a magic trick✨! We start with something, take some away, and see what's left.

Remember, subtraction is all about taking away and finding the difference. It's like playing detective to solve the mystery of what's left!

• If there are 8 carrots in the basket. A rabbit takes away 3 carrots. How many carrots are left in the basket now?
  
• To find how many carrots are left, we cross out 3 carrots and count the remaining uncrossed carrots.
  
• There are 5 uncrossed carrots.
  So, 5 carrots are left in the basket.
  We can write it as:
  8 - 3 = 5     Or      

Bonus Tip: When we write the smaller number below the bigger number for subtraction,
it is called vertical subtraction.
