Paragraph 2

You sat and stared in silence surrounded by the chatter,

Now tell me, Jane,

and please be plain,

is there anything the matter?"

Summary: The next few lines of the poem say that the teacher shows her concern towards Jane. She asked Jane to open up and say what the matter is. Jane was sitting quietly without even uttering a sound which attracted the teacher’s attention. The teacher wanted Jane to give a very clear reply.

Paragraph 3

Jane looked up and then she spoke,

Her voice was clear and low:

"There are many people in this world

Who are rather quiet you know!"

Summary: The last few lines of the poem are Jane’s reply to the teacher. Her nature and characteristic is highlighted in these lines. She had a low but a clear voice. She took stand for all that person who prefer to be quiet. Every single person in this world is different in every way, someone likes to open up, someone likes to keep it within themselves. Everyone should be given their space and respect.
