all right back again for theory lesson
four wasn't too long ago that we had
theory lesson three so in this one in
the next several theory lessons maybe
three or four we're going to be talking
about key signatures and the circle of
fifths key signatures will tell you
basically what notes in a song or sharp
or flat at least to a degree and I'll
explain more and more in depth about
that so it is very important to know
especially moving forward so get ready
because this is quite a lot to take in
I'll go over and over it again and again
I'll answer any comments or questions
you have and we'll go from there so I'll
see you in a second for the lesson
alright here we are for theory lesson
four so we're not going to do a lot of
playing on the piano today so we have
something in front of us it's pretty a
pretty big deal actually and we're
probably going to spend the next three
or four theory lessons I believe on just
this and and and maybe I'll make some
videos after going over it because it is
very important but it is a lot to take
in at the same time so here we have the
circle of fifths before we start on the
circle of fifths I want to talk about
something called the order of sharps and
the order of flats before you we can
really look into this we need to
memorize or order sharps and order flats
the order of sharps will tell you which
order we're adding the sharps in four
key signatures I'll explain more about
key signatures in a second but the order
of sharps goes F C g d a e B again it's
F C g d a e be so memorize that there's
not really a saying that goes along with
that that I have but the other the order
of flats is a little bit easier to
remember because there is some way to
memorize it so the order flats is B e a
D G C F so again B
a D G C F or obviously it spells the
word bead and then a lot of people learn
in school about greatest common factor
GCF so bead greatest common factor B ei
D G C F again order sharps FC g d AE b
order flats B ad G C F so make sure you
spend some time memorizing those two
very very important to know that like
like your backhand or whatever the
expression is so here we have the circle
of fists in the circle of fists
it's going to tell you about what's
called key signatures now you might you
might you might know what key signatures
are you might not key signatures
basically are these things we have a lot
of them here so say we have this one
this what this is telling you is that
the key of G has one sharp and if you
can see that this sharp you know two
sharp is if that number sign thing goes
through that top line in the treble clef
on that top line you know as f so that
what this is telling you here and this
is is before any not any piece of music
but most pieces of music go of a key
signature that tells you that every F in
the whole song doesn't matter whether
it's on this top line or bottom space
doesn't matter whether it's in bass clef
or treble clef tells you that every F in
that song is going to be sharp even if
it doesn't have a sharp next to it now
there can be exceptions you can have a
natural next to it to make it regular F
if they want but unless they otherwise
tell you this tells you that every F and
the whole song is sharp so if you look
at let's look at this first one here so
we've been talking a lot about the key
of C so if you remember one of the main
things I've talked about with the key of
C is that it has zero sharps and zero
flat so there are no no Black Keys that
we're playing at all
and that's basically what that signifies
there so the key of C if we look up here
at the top has zero sharps and zero
flats so I want you to memorize that
because that's pretty easy
remember key of C key of c-major by the
way for every case ensure there's a
major in minor key and I'll explain that
later so all of these on this paper they
are major keys so key of C major has
zero sharps and zero flats all white
keys here going to the right as we
usually would when we're reading you can
go to the left on this and I'll explain
that probably the next couple lessons
but we're going to the right or
clockwise I guess you could say so going
to the next one we have so what this
tells us is that this is the key of G
and the key of G has one sharp and that
sharp is f sharp meaning that like I
said every F in the entire song is going
to be sharp the very next one we have D
D has 2 sharps if you see here there's 1
over F and 1 over C that means that
every F and every C no matter where
they're written on the staff in the
whole song unless they tell you
otherwise is going to be short even if
there's not a sharp right next to every
F or C so the next one we're only going
to go up to a today the key of a has
three sharps F C and G meaning that
every F every C and every G and the
whole song is going to be sharp even if
they don't tell you now we're going to
do playing examples with this later on
maybe not right away
but I'll probably ease you into it with
things in the key of C which we've been
doing so part of that works done and the
key of G will probably come next and
that will just get you some experience
playing a song knowing that every F is
sharp so now what about the order of
sharps or flats I made you memorize what
is the significance about that well the
order of sharps is the order in which
you add the sharps in so let's go over
this C has nothing so G
one sharp well what's what's the first
sharp in your order of sharps well
remember that that is going to be F so
well lucky there F sharp D the key of D
now has two sharps so you want to count
the first two in your order sharps and
that's going to be F sharp and C sharp
and then the next key signature is going
to be F c g and x1 f cg d FC g d a FC g
dae and the last one is FC g d AE b so
that tells you what order to add the
sharps in pretty easy
you ordered a flat same thing if we go
for four flats we're going to go to the
left we're not going to talk a whole lot
about flats today but i just want to
show you that uh that their first one
here has one flat and that's B flat next
one has B flat E flat B flat E flat a B
e a d b e a D G and then the last one is
B e a D G C F so let's take a look at
what we have going on here
so for the first I only want you to
memorize C Casey is nothing key of G has
one sharp and key of D has 2 sharps and
maybe the key of a to memorize that that
has three sharps so C 0 G 1 sharp D 2
sharps and A three sharps and then we'll
go over more of these next time I don't
want to overload you because I know
there was a lot of stuff we talked about
in this lesson and like I said it's
going to take three or four lessons to
go over it all
so remember C is 0 G has one sharp F
sharp D has 2 sharps F sharp and C sharp
a has three sharps F C and G so I will
be posting this circle of fifths on to
the wiki which I will post a link to in
the description if not you can go to my
wiki announcement video
and the link is there um so that's just
basically wraps up our lesson for today
just memorize fcg ta EB for order sharps
or flats is be e ad GCF or beat greatest
common factor if you want to say and and
all you have to know is basically what a
key signature is it tells you what what
notes are going to be sharped in the
whole song or what notes are going to be
flat in the whole song unless it tells
you otherwise and this is very important
because there are many many many many
many songs written in key signatures and
going forward so you'll have to know
what we're talking about so I know this
this whole thing looking at it the first
time is very intimidating but trust me
once you get used to it you'll know it
very well and it will come in handy I
promise you
so there you have it there's 30 lesson

we talked about was the order of sharps

is though the order sharps is the order
in which you add the sharps going around
the circle of fists and the order of
flats is the order in which you add the
flats going around the circle of fists
and like I said I'll go over it again
and again quite a few times until you
understand pretty important to memorize
the circle of fist but not absolutely
necessary considering you can look this
up at any time so I guess if you don't
want to memorize it the most important
thing is just knowing what the circle
fits is about
I'll explain later why it's called the
circle of fifths but just know that it
tells you what key signatures are which
and those tell you which which notes are
sharp and flat in ace the P piece of
music so anyway next times theory lesson
