A Tale of Valour: 
Major Somnath Sharma and the Battle of Badgam
Operation Gulmarg
After independence in 
1947, Pakistan launched 
Operation Gulmarg to 
capture Kashmir, 
sending trained fighters 
to invade key areas like 
Srinagar airport.
Kashmir Joins India
On 26 October 1947, 
Kashmir officially joined 
India, and the Indian 
Army was flown in the 
next day to protect it.
The Brave Major
Among the troops was 
Major Somnath Sharma, 
leader of D Company, 4 
Kumaon Regiment. Even 
with an injured arm in 
plaster, he refused to 
stay back.
The Battle of Badgam
The village of Badgam near the airport was strategically important. On 3 November 
1947, Major Somnath's company of 90 men faced nearly 500 enemy fighters.
At first, the enemy used a small attack as a trick, then launched a much larger assault 
from another direction.
Major Somnath remained calm, requested air support, and used special ground signs 
to guide Indian fighter planes.
Courage in Action
He bravely moved under fire, filling 
magazines and motivating his men to 
fight on despite being heavily 
outnumbered.
Last Stand
When asked to retreat due to lack of 
ammunition, he refused, declaring he 
would fight to the last man and the 
last bullet.
Ultimate Sacrifice
While helping a fellow soldier at the 
machine gun, a mortar shell killed 
him instantly.
Inspiring Legacy
Inspired by his courage, his men 
fought for six more hours, delaying 
the enemy until reinforcements 
arrived.
