Waiting for the Rain
A Story of Patience, Nature, and Hope
The Hardworking Farmer
Velu was a hardworking farmer who loved his
land and never missed a day of work, not even
during festivals or holidays.
For six years, his fields gave him good crops of
jowar and dal, which made him proud and
hopeful.
The Dry Morning
One morning, Velu woke up looking forward to
rain, but the sky was clear with only the bright
red sun.
Without rain, he could not plough the fields, and
this made him anxious and helpless.
The Failed Monsoon
This year, the monsoon rains had failed to arrive on time,
which was unusual.
The earth had become dry, cracked, and lifeless, worrying all
farmers in the village.
Villagers began losing patience and thought about consulting
astrologers to perform rituals to bring rain.
Velu did not believe in such practices, as he trusted nature
and science more than superstition.
The Dry Morning
One morning, Velu woke up looking forward to rain, but the sky
was clear with only the bright red sun.
Without rain, he could not plough the fields, and this made him
anxious and helpless.
01
Journey to the City
He decided to travel to the
city and visited the
weather office to ask
about the rains.
The experts there said
that weather conditions
seemed right but still
could not explain why the
rains had not come.
02
Returning Home
Discouraged
Velu returned home tired,
dusty, and very
discouraged after hearing
no definite answer.
On the way back, he
stopped under a shady
tree to rest from the heat.
03
Meeting the Wise Woman
There he saw an old woman already sitting under the
tree with a kind face, sparkling eyes, and a warm
smile.
"Perhaps the land is
tired"
Velu began talking to her
and shared his sadness
about the long drought and
the suffering of farmers.
He told her how much
effort he had put into his
land and how helpless he
felt without rain.
The Woman's Wisdom
The old woman listened
patiently and then gently
suggested that perhaps the land
was tired.
She explained that just like
humans, the earth also needs
time to rest and recover.
Nature's Ancient Rhythm
She reminded him that the soil
has been worked for thousands
of years and nature sometimes
gives it a pause.
Her wise words made Velu stop
and think seriously about what
she said.
A New Understanding
He realised that this long dry
season might be nature's way of
letting the land regain its
strength.
Feeling calmer, Velu began his
walk home, thinking about the
old woman's wisdom.
The Rain Finally Comes
A Cool Breeze
On the way, he felt a cool breeze
brush against him and noticed a
tiny drop of water fall on his
shoulder.
Dark Clouds Gathering
He looked up and saw dark clouds
slowly gathering in the sky.
Signs of Rain
The air grew cooler, the light
dimmed, and soon it appeared as
though rain was about to fall.
Joy and Relief
Velu was filled with happiness and relief, realising that rain would finally come.
Velu's Realisation
He understood that everything in nature happens at the right time and for a
reason.
With a joyful heart, he ran home, hopeful for the future and ready to begin
farming again with renewed spirit.
Theme/Message
Connection with Nature
The main theme of the story is
the connection between humans
and nature. It shows how farmers
depend on the weather for their
crops.
Patience and
Understanding
Another important theme is
patience and understanding.
Sometimes, things do not happen
right away, and we must wait for
nature to take its course.
Importance of Rest
The story also highlights the
importance of rest. Just like
people need breaks, the land also
needs time to recover and
rejuvenate.
Respect Nature's Rhythms
The message of the story is that
hard work is important, but it is
equally important to respect
nature's rhythms.
Have Hope in Tough Times
It teaches us to have hope, even
in tough times. Just like Velu
learned to trust that rain would
come, we should trust that good
things will happen in our lives,
too.
Everything Has a Purpose
By listening to the wisdom of the
old woman, Velu learns that
every living thing has a purpose
and a cycle, and we must be
patient with ourselves and with
nature.
