The UNSC had been set up during World War II and it continues to be relevant even today. The UN Security Council's key duties include upholding global security and responding to crises, which includes deciding where and when peacekeeping operations should be deployed. Then a resolution to launch a peace operation is approved.. It keeps a watch on the ongoing resolutions and can make amends in between taking suggestions from the members. It imposes sanctions on those not abiding by its resolutions to create pressure for the attainment of its security objectives. Since 1966 it has established 30 sanction regimes.
It had earlier imposed sanctions on the Taliban as well. Recently the UNSC unanimously approved a resolution defining that the new Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers must establish an inclusive government that upholds equal rights to women. They have clearly stated that the 15 members will be keeping a very close watch on the activities of the Taliban.
The UNSC has its presence in Afghanistan since 1948 and its sad that it continues to be present there even after the Taliban took over. It is disheartening to see that the Taliban has still not been declared as a terrorist outfit though, 17 of its 33 leaders are under sanctions.
